“I discovered I am strong and resilient.”
Of course, it was not just me dealing with this on my own. The resilience I discovered was boosted by the support of my family, especially my husband Francis and my sister Ruby, and the stories of the cancer survivors I’ve read about and have gotten in touch with online. Even our pet macaw, Paulie, kept my mind busy – away from negative thoughts and from wasting my time googling my diagnosis. And of course my faith in God and Mama Mary carried me through as well.
I’m sharing my story in the hope of helping others the way other survivors helped me become more informed and less afraid. I have also put up my own foundation to help women and children going through health crises and those in need of assistance for their education. I want other cancer patients to know that they can also be strong and resilient in the face of – and can survive – a dreaded disease.
Cancer can enter anyone’s life regardless of age, family history, diet, and social status. The more vigilant we are about our health, the better we will be able to deal with any health issues early on. In the case of breast cancer, early detection saves lives. Start by doing a monthly self-breast exam.

It is part of ICANSERVE Foundation’s 25th anniversary celebration in collaboration with Camera Club of the Philippines. With thanks to Owen Santos and Zonia Bandoy.
